A day after the iOS 4 was released I upgraded my iPhone 3Gs to benefit from all the new features. I was delighted with the new Cellular Data switch – it allowed my iphone to be a real phone and last for days not merely hours, all due to the GPRS/3G not abusing the battery.

Unfortunately one of the “features” in iOS4 turned out to be an even worse battery abuser – the persistent Wi-Fi. While I was at home or in the office – about 20 hours of my average day – the phone was constantly connected to the Wi-Fi and the battery lasted for 15-16 hours tops, with no more than an hour of actual usage!

So far there is no “Persistent Wi-Fi” switch, so I set on finding out what caused this behavior, and here is what you need to do to get it off:

Disable notifications (yes, no more knowing when someone wrote on your Faceboko wall or mentioned you on twitter)

Disable any Push e-mail, from the list of e-mails (Exchange, GMail, Yahoo, etc.), not just the Push switch in Settings -> Mail -> Fetch New Data!

If you are using Exchange (or Gmail/Google Apps) you’ll also need to disable your calendar and contacts unfortunately. In other words you have to switch to IMAP/POP e-mails.

This feature, unfortunately, makes you chose between having Push e-mail and notifications or manually turning on and off the Wi-Fi every time you need it, just like those nasty Symbian phones, the iPhone claims to be superior to!

UPDATE: after ten days I have to admit – I was wrong. Probably one of those nasty background-running apps was keeping the Wi-Fi connected at all times. Now I close most of my apps after I’m done with them and battery indeed lasts for 2 days and about 3 hours of use! Cheers!

Have you seen a Steve Jobs keynote? Have you noticed he seems to be wearing the same black polo/turtle neck for years?

I got interested and here’s what came up:

In the 1998 Macworld keynote he seems to be wearing the black turtle neck. Unfortunately the quality of the video is quite low, but I’m sure if you dig deeper you can find a better quality pictures/videos.

Same goes for the 1999 keynote, where even Noah Wyle wears one of these! Noah Wyle played Jobs in Pirates of Silicon Valley which came out in 1999.

Skipping a few years and you can compare and contrast some pictures of 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010.

The jeans Jobs wears are of different color on some occasions, and so are the sneakers! But the turtle neck looks the same always! So what is that turtle neck made of? Kevlar? Diamond threads? Unobtainium? Or maybe it’s not the threads at all!

I believe the explanations for the persistence of the turtle neck is a new Apple product! It could easily come to mind that Apple is testing out (yes in plain sight!) a completely new product. Ladies and Gentlemen, meet:

The iPowder!

Washing a regular piece of clothing with the iPowder seems to make it extremely durable and keep the colors intact for at least 12 years! What better advertising then show the people that what they’ve been witnessing for all those years was a test case of a completely new Apple product that will undoubtfully change the world! It doesn’t irritate the skin! Preserves the color and strengthens the threads! It was proved that 1 in 1000 cases it might cause a severe liver damage, but this minor bug is being worked on and it will certainly be fixed before rolling out the final product!

A few hours ago I saw in my Apple RSS feed that Aperture 3 has been released so I immediately followed the embedded link, browsed the new features and downloaded the demo. I’m no professional photographer. I shoot mostly for fun and once in a while for the websites I design. Aperture 2 is good, but there were some weak points I hated. Here’s what’s new at a glance, and what I love about Aperture 3, for a full list of all new feature visit Aperture’s features website:

There is face recognition – borrowed from iPhoto now you can tag your friends, family and models :)

There is geotagging – again, borrowed from iPhoto, you can view on a map where your photos were shot. But there’s an additional feature – you can geotag your existing photos using a track file. Here’s a simple workflow for you – get MotionX GPS Lite for your iPhone, make sure your camera and your iPhone’s clocks are in sync, fire MotionX GPS up, and start shooting. When you import your photo shoot in Aperture you can easily geotag your photos from the MotionX GPS’ exported track file. Of course that will work with any other GPS phone that can export tracks. I can finally get rid of the software that used to GPS tag my photos! You can, of course, tag your photos by hand too – just drag and drop them on the map!

You can easily switch multiple libraries. Until now when I was done with a project I had to export it as a Project and store it on my external hard drive, if I needed a picture I had to re-import it just to find one picture – no more! You can export your project as a library and later on simply open it from Aperture! Although I haven’t tested this it is a very prominent and missed-by-me-until-now feature.

I can finally hook up my phone to Aperture! Aperture now does Video! Video editing cannot be compare to Final Cut or any other video editing software but this is a photo management/editing software after all. Finally you can have your handset’s images and videos in one place!

You can post your photos to Facebook and Flickr. With Aperture 2 you could use a number of plugins and 3rd party software to upload directly to Facebook and Flickr but you no longer need to use any of that – just click the button in the main toolbar!

While using Aperture 3 for an hour or so I came across only one drawback – I couldn’t use my Aperture 2 library with the demo, but I’m pretty sure it will be converted if I were to use the full version.

Aperture 3 really is a major release with many new major features. To be honest I don’t think there’s anything I miss from Aperture 3 unlike Aperture 2.

A month or so back I bought on eBay a used Mighty Mouse. I bought it for one reason only – scroll and right button click. Soon after it arrived I was a bit disappointed with the right button performance and not much later with the scrolling. The right button would work only if I lift my left finger before hitting the right side of the mouse. The scroll would work perfectly when scrolling down but sometimes would get stuck when scrolling up.

Today I decided to open it up and clean it, hoping scrolling can be fixed. I did some googling and I found out that this is apparently known and very common problem. I found some instructions and followed them thus disassembling my mouse. There was a huge ball of dust on one of the scrollers (probably the one getting stuck).

I cleaned it up and started assembling the mouse. Duuuh. It turns out my mouse is a bit different from the tutorial I followed and the bottom part does not clip but is glued. On top of that cleaning it up didn’t fix the scroll problems so I guess I’m going back to my old Mac Pro mouse. :(

UPDATE 31/07: I couldn’t fix my might mouse yesterday and there were no signs of improvement. Today, I reassembled it and did some more cleaning and it is as good as new – apparently I had it improperly assembled. The tutorial I followed did not say anything about glueing the mouse, but the comments did! So, again, I did not read the whole thing before starting the procedure. I figured out I don’t really need the part that needs to be glued for the proper operation of my mouse, and I decided to just leave the plastic on my desk. I hope someone doesn’t throw it away when cleaning ;)
